What to expect from trauma counseling:
Counselors help youth process their trauma in many ways, including play and art therapy, drama therapy, and use of therapeutic games, and other evidence-based treatments.
Caregivers can greatly contribute to their child’s healing process. Counselors discuss preferences for caregiver involvement with each youth and their family.
Counselors talk with the youth and their parent or caregiver to set goals for counseling based on the individual youth’s symptoms.
Trauma informed counseling provides the youth’s parent or caregiver with tools and tips for how to help continue the healing process throughout the week at home and at school.
All counseling staff have a minimum of a master’s degree in social work, counseling or psychology and have extensive experience working with children and adolescents and their families.
How trauma counseling works:
Counseling is provided at no cost to participants.
Our goal is to connect with your requests for information or support as soon as possible, all inquiries are responded to within one week. Inquiries can be made by calling 434-906-0763 or through our online referral form.
Once the referral is made, a referral team member will call to share more information about the program and determine whether your child is eligible. Eligible youth will be placed on a waiting list.
There is typically a waiting period to begin. If your child needs counseling urgently or if you would prefer to explore other options, we are able to provide referral resources.
Once an intake is scheduled, the youth’s guardian should come prepared to provide information on the youth’s history and symptoms. If for any reason Inside Out Counseling is not a fit, the counselor will provide referrals to appropriate services upon request.
Counseling sessions are held at the ReadyKids office and City of Promise.
Funding for this program is provided by the Department of Criminal Justice Services, grant #20-A4785VD18 and #20-A4122VP18.
