Teen Counseling Program

The Teen Counseling Program provides individual and family counseling to foster positive, nurturing family relationships and to ensure that teens are safe and healthy.

Do you want to?

  • Develop stronger communication skills, learn how to resolve conflicts and work on problem-solving strategies?
  • Improve relationships within your family?
  • Talk through your decision-making patterns?

Who can participate:

  • Teens, ages 12-17, who are not involved with the Department of Social Services or the Department of Juvenile Justice.
  • Teens who have turned 18 but are still working towards high school graduation.
  • Residents of Charlottesville and Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa or Nelson county.
  • This program has eligibility requirements that a counselor can talk through with you. Call to see if this could be a good fit.

What to expect from teen counseling:

  • Teens have the option to participate in individual and/or family counseling. They can discuss preferences with their counselor. Group sessions with family members will be set up as needed.
  • Counseling is short term (3 months). Referrals for longer term services can be made as needed.
  • Our counselors work with teens to eliminate transportation and scheduling issues; counseling can take place over the phone, in home, in school, or at the ReadyKids offices.
  • When necessary, TCP can connect teens up to age 18 with emergency shelter for up to 21 days.
  • All TCP counseling staff have a minimum of a master’s degree in social work, counseling or psychology and have extensive experience working with children and adolescents and their families.

How teen counseling works:

  • This program is provided at no cost to participants.
  • Our goal is for you to meet with a counselor within one week of your first contact with our program.
  • You and your counselor will set a schedule and location for counseling that best meets your needs.
  • Through TCP, you can meet with your counselor for up to 4 hours per week for up to three months.
  • Extending the relationship with your counselor beyond three months will be discussed on an as-needed basis.

This project is supported by federal grant #90CY6709-01-00 through the Runaway and Homeless Youth Act.
